Therapy for Anxiety

Are you a “worrier?”

Is worry or anxiety taking over your life?

When you’re at work or school, do you worry about what’s going on at home?  When you’re at home, do you worry about what’s going on at work or school?

Does it feel like you can’t relax, or can’t control the anxiety no matter how hard you try?

Have you already tried therapy but found it ineffective?

Excessive, ongoing anxiety and worry that are difficult to control and interfere with day-to-day activities may be a sign of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, or GAD.

Symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder vary but may include:

  • Persistent worrying or anxiety about a number of areas that are out of proportion to the impact of the events
  • Overthinking plans and solutions to all possible worst-case outcomes
  • Perceiving situations and events as threatening, even when they aren’t
  • Difficulty handling uncertainty
  • Indecisiveness and fear of making the wrong decision
  • Inability to set aside or let go of a worry
  • Inability to relax, feeling restless, and feeling keyed up or on edge
  • Difficulty concentrating, or the feeling that your mind “goes blank”

If this sounds like you, I’m confident I can help. My practice offers the most effective forms of treatment for GAD, to get the relief from undue worry and anxiety that you need and deserve.  When it comes to treating GAD and other anxiety disorders, research shows that psychotherapy is usually the most effective option. That’s because anxiety therapy – as opposed to anxiety medication – treats more than just symptoms but actually gets to the root of the problem.

Often, these are the symptoms of anxiety:

  • Nervousness, restlessness or being tense
  • Feelings of danger, panic or dread
  • Muscular tightness or tension
  • Tightness in the chest or heart racing
  • Gastrintestinal problems
  • Clammy, sweaty palms
  • Rapid breathing or hyperventilation
  • Increased or heavy sweating
  • Trembling or muscle twitching
  • Weakness or lethargy
  • Difficulty focusing or thinking clearly about anything other than the thing you’re worried about
  • Insomnia
  • Obsessions about certain thoughts, images, or ideas, a sign of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Anxiety related to a particularly stressful life event or experience that has occurred in the past, a sign of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Therapy can help to uncover the underlying causes of your worries and fears, help you learn how to relax, look at situations in a new, less frightening way, and develop better coping mechanisms and problem-solving skills.  Therapy can help you be more relaxed and fully present in the now, instead of being preoccupied with what could occur in the future.  Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is an especially effective form of therapy in treating anxiety disorders.
